Enhanced star application deadline

Homeowners who receive the STAR Credit check from the State, instead of the STAR Exemption on their tax bill, do not need to apply for the Enhanced STAR Credit upon turning 65. The State will automatically upgrade your Basic STAR Credit to the Enhanced STAR Credit.

• Obtain the Enhanced STAR Exemption on their 2022/23 tax bill, by filing the Enhanced STAR Exemption application and Income Verification Worksheet with the Assessor by the Tuesday, March 1st deadline. Once the Enhanced STAR Exemption is granted, you need not reapply. As long as you qualify, the Enhanced STAR Exemption benefits will be reflected on your tax bill, but the benefits will be capped from one tax year to the next.
• Register with New York State for the Enhanced STAR Credit. If you register with the State STAR Credit program, the STAR exemption will no longer appear on your tax bill in December, and you will instead receive a STAR Credit Check from the State. The STAR Credit benefits are not capped like the STAR Exemption benefits. However, if you are still paying a mortgage, once the exemption is removed from your tax bill, your escrow will require adjustment. You may wish to deposit the STAR Credit Check into your bank account to ensure timely payment of your real property tax bill.

Automatic Renewal of Senior Citizen and Disability Exemptions for 2022/23

Pursuant to the Governor’s Executive Order No. 11.1 of 2022 and the Town of Islip Town Board Resolution adopted on January 11, 2022, Senior Citizen (RP-467) and Disability (RP-459-c) Exemptions will be AUTOMATICALLY RENEWED for the 2022/23 tax year, as long as the property remains the exemption recipient’s primary residence and there are no changes to ownership (e.g., adding another owner to the deed, or transferring the property to a new owner).

The deadline to file all other real property tax exemptions is March 1st.
